Pre-Trip Vehicle Checks for Long-Distance Road Trips
In short: Before a long drive, check tyres (including the spare), brakes, fluids, battery, lights, wipers and belts, confirm your documents and FASTag, and pack a basic tool and safety kit. Do the checks a few days early so you can fix anything you find.
Quick facts
| Do it | 3 to 7 days before departure |
|---|---|
| Biggest risks | Tyres, brakes, cooling and battery |
| Documents | Licence, RC, insurance, PUC, FASTag |
Tyres and wheels
- Check pressure on all tyres including the spare, using the placard on your vehicle.
- Look for cuts, bulges, uneven wear and embedded objects; check tyre age as well as tread.
- Confirm the jack, wheel spanner and locking-nut key are in the vehicle and that you know how to use them.
Brakes, suspension and steering
- Listen for grinding or squealing, and check pad thickness and brake fluid level.
- Check for fluid leaks, play in the steering and worn suspension components before long mountain descents.
Engine bay and fluids
- Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power-steering fluid (if fitted) and washer fluid.
- Belts and hoses: look for cracks or fraying.
- Battery terminals: clean and tight; replace an old battery before a long trip.
Lights, wipers and visibility
Test headlamps, indicators, brake lights and hazard lights. Replace worn wiper blades before the rains; visibility matters on ghat roads.
Documents and tolls
- Driving licence, registration certificate, insurance and a valid pollution-under-control certificate.
- A working FASTag with balance.
- Emergency contacts, including your insurer's roadside assistance number. India's emergency number is 112 and the NHAI highway helpline is 1033.
What to carry
Pack a first-aid kit, torch, tyre inflator and gauge, puncture repair kit, jump leads, warning triangle, fire extinguisher and a basic tool roll. For soft-ground routes, add the items in the recovery kit checklist. For water and fuel margins, use the expedition planning guide.
After you load the vehicle
Recheck tyre pressure for the loaded weight, secure heavy items low and forward in the cabin, and keep valuables out of sight. Beginners can follow the full plan in overlanding in India for beginners.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I service the vehicle before a road trip?
Aim for at least a few days so you can fix any problem the service finds.
Should I check the spare tyre?
Yes. A flat spare is a common cause of stranded trips.
Do I need a pollution certificate?
A valid PUC certificate is required for vehicles in India; check the current rules on the Parivahan site.
What if the warning light comes on mid-trip?
Stop safely, read the manual, and call roadside assistance rather than continuing on a ghat road.
