Scenic Drives Around the Nilgiris: Planning Your Route
In short: The Nilgiris have several ghat roads with very different characters: the busy Coonoor ghat on NH 181 with 14 hairpins, the quieter Kotagiri ghat with 4, the steep 36-hairpin Kalhatti ghat that closes overnight, and the forest route through Mudumalai. Choose by vehicle, season and appetite for traffic.

A simple loop
In the peak tourist season, traffic between the Coonoor and Kotagiri ghats is often managed as one-way: uphill traffic uses the Coonoor ghat and downhill traffic uses the Kotagiri ghat. A loop up one and down the other is easy to plan, but confirm the current arrangement with local authorities.
Drive well on ghat roads
- Use a low gear on descents instead of riding the brakes.
- Give uphill traffic priority where the road is narrow.
- Do not stop on blind bends for photos; use designated viewpoints.
- Carry water, a charged phone and offline maps.
Rail and heritage
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is part of the Mountain Railways of India, a UNESCO World Heritage property. Watch from viewpoints along the road, or add a train ride on a separate day.
