Why Bundelkhand

Bundelkhand is a plateau region between 250 and 300 m, within the Vindhya range, that rarely makes headline itineraries. It is rich in forts and temples. The Chandelas built Khajuraho between the 9th and 12th centuries and their power ended in 1182 CE. The Bundelas replaced the Khangar rulers in the 14th century, and the region took its name from them.

Fort and town stops

  • Jhansi Fort and Orchha, with its palace complex.
  • Datia, a former princely state.
  • Kalinjar, with its Neelkanth Temple.
  • Chanderi, Panna (with Panna National Park and Raneh Falls), Chitrakoot and Khajuraho.

Season and heat

The region is mainly dry, with summer heat and water scarcity. Choose the cooler months, carry plenty of water, and use fuel, water and emergency planning.

Visit well

Many sites are ASI-protected; follow monument rules and see how to read a historic site. Compare with the south's fort circuits in forts of Tamil Nadu. Check vehicle readiness. Rules, permits, closures and fees change. Confirm locally before you travel.
