In short: Sanchi in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh, about 46 km northeast of Bhopal, centres on the Great Stupa, commissioned by Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Shunga railings, four Satavahana-era gateways, and Gupta additions followed, and monuments continued up to about the 12th century CE.

Reading the carvings

The gateways are richly carved with scenes from the Buddha's life, yet the Buddha is shown through symbols such as footprints, an empty throne or the Bodhi tree. The Southern Gateway's inscription names Satakarni II, and a reliefs inscription records ivory-workers from Vidisha.

Beyond the main hill

Nearby stupa sites include Satdhara, Bhojpur (Morel Khurd), Andher and Sonari. Bharhut lies about 300 km northeast.
