A Road Trip Through Spiti Valley: Mountain Roads and High-Altitude Landscapes
In short: Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert in Himachal Pradesh, with Kaza at about 3,650 m. The Shimla route (about 412 km) is open year-round but difficult and climbs gradually, which helps acclimatisation. The Manali route over Kunzum Pass (4,590 m) is summer-only and considered treacherous.
Quick facts
| Starting point | Shimla or Manali |
|---|---|
| Kaza | About 3,650 m, administrative headquarters |
| Shimla route | About 412 km, open year-round but difficult |
| Manali route | About 201 km to Kaza, summer only, via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass |
| Kunzum Pass | 4,590 m |
| Climate | Rain shadow, about 50 mm rainfall, -25 to 15 C |
What Spiti is
Spiti lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so it is barren, cold and dry, with little monsoon rain. Temperatures range from about -25 C in winter to about 15 C in summer. Heavy snow can cut the sub-division off from the district headquarters for five to six months.
Two ways in
Altitude sickness is a real risk. Travellers from low elevations are advised to take the Shimla route. Read driving in the Himalayas before you decide.
| Route | Season | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla, along the Sutlej | Year-round, but difficult | Gradual climb, better for acclimatising |
| Manali, Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass | Summer | Shorter, higher, described as treacherous |
Places worth the drive
- Key, Tabo and Dhankar monasteries, all of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.
- Kibber, home to a wildlife sanctuary; Langza, known for its Buddha statue; Hikkim.
- Chandratal, a popular lake that is reached in the open season.
Prepare the vehicle and the plan
- Complete expedition vehicle preparation and the pre-trip checks.
- Check weather forecasts daily; snow, rain and slides can close roads.
- Fuel is scarce on high routes, so use fuel, water and emergency planning.
- Build in rest days for altitude. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line permit; Indian citizens do not, but confirm current rules locally.
