The Grand Rajasthan Road Trip: Forts, Desert Roads and Historic Towns

Road trips · Overlanding and road trips · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: Six Rajasthan forts (Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amer and Jaisalmer) were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2013. A road trip links them with the desert city of Jaisalmer, about 575 km west of Jaipur, and works best in the cooler months from December to February.

Why Rajasthan suits a road trip

Rajasthan is a state where the fort is the destination and the road is the story. The UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan are spread across the state, from Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh in the south to Amer near Jaipur and Jaisalmer in the west, so a loop is the natural way to see them.

Distances are long and the landscape opens out as you go west, which makes it a good first long-distance trip as well as a rewarding one for experienced drivers. Start with overlanding in India for beginners if this is your first multi-day drive.

Into the desert at Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer sits in the heart of the Thar Desert and is crowned by a hilltop fort with 99 bastions. About a quarter of the city's population is reported to live inside the fort, so treat it as a living neighbourhood, not a museum: keep noise low and avoid blocking narrow lanes.

The town is known for its yellow sandstone houses and temples. Summer highs reach about 40 C and winter nights can fall close to freezing, so the cool season is the sensible choice for a family trip.

Plan the loop

Visit with care

Ranthambore Fort lies inside a national park, so access follows park rules. Confirm timings, entry rules and fees for every fort before you go. Rules, permits, closures and fees change. Confirm locally before you travel.
