The short answer
The Jimny works well for long highway trips at 80 to 100 km/h. Overtaking needs distance and planning, especially in the automatic. Stop for fuel about every 300 to 350 km, pack inside the car, and expect some wind noise. If you drive fast on empty roads, this is not the best car for it.
Good at
- Steady 80 to 100 km/h cruising
- Stability at 100 km/h as one owner reports
- Comfort with four people and luggage
- Easy to place on narrow roads
Weaker at
- Quick overtakes on two-lane roads
- Climbing with a full load
- High-speed cruising
- Luggage space, 211 L with the seats up
Power and overtaking
With 104.8 hp and 134.2 Nm at 4,000 rpm, the Jimny has enough for traffic pace but not much in reserve. A long-term review of the automatic says overtaking takes a lot of effort, anticipation and patience, and that its overdrive switch helps by holding lower gears. In the manual you can drop a gear yourself.
- Pick passing spots with plenty of clear road
- Drop a gear early, do not wait
- Avoid overtaking on climbs with a full load
- Keep a gap to the vehicle ahead so you can keep momentum
Speed, noise and comfort
One owner with four passengers and a full boot found the car stable and predictable at 100 km/h, with wind noise lower than expected. Another reviewer calls the steering heavy. Check ride, noise and seat comfort yourself on a long test drive.

Common mistakes
- Overtaking without room. Power is modest.
- Cruising too fast. Mileage and comfort both drop.
- Packing on the roof. It adds drag and weight.
- Skipping breaks. A short, firm car tires drivers.
- Trusting one review. Test drive on a highway.
