There is something strangely beautiful about finding water in the middle of the desert.

That was my first feeling when we reached Zakher Lake in Al Ain.

All around us, there is sand and open desert, and then suddenly you come across this small lake surrounded by reeds and greenery.

It feels unexpected.

A little pocket of water sitting quietly in the middle of the desert.

Zakher Lake is a man-made lake created from treated wastewater that was released onto the land. Over time, the groundwater level rose and the lake developed.

Today, this unusual water source has created a peaceful environment for birds and other wildlife.

For me, this is the kind of place where you don't need a packed itinerary.

Just park, walk around the lake, sit in the shade, have a picnic and enjoy the quietness.
