Some mountain drives are about the challenge.
Others are simply about getting away from the city and following the landscape wherever it takes you.
The drive from Wadi Shawka towards Baseerah Dam is a little bit of both.
We started from the Wadi Shawka area, leaving the more developed sections behind and following the rougher mountain tracks deeper into the Hajar Mountains. Wadi Shawka is a seasonal watercourse in Ras Al Khaimah, surrounded by rocky mountains, farms and old settlements.
The first part of the drive was fairly relaxed. Rocky tracks, small climbs and wide sections of the wadi made it easy to settle into the journey. But the further we went, the more rugged the landscape became.
This is where having a 4WD makes the experience much more enjoyable.
There are uneven rocky sections, loose surfaces and small climbs where you need to choose your line carefully. It isn't about driving fast. We kept the speed low, watched the terrain and stopped whenever a viewpoint caught our attention.
What I enjoyed most was the changing scenery.
One moment you're driving between dry mountain walls, and the next you come across green farms, palm trees or a small settlement tucked between the rocks. The contrast makes this part of Ras Al Khaimah feel completely different from the desert landscapes most visitors associate with the UAE.
Eventually, the drive leads towards the Baseerah Dam area, giving you another peaceful spot to stop, stretch your legs and enjoy the surrounding mountains.
If you've already explored the popular Wadi Shawka Dam, this route is a nice way to go a little further and experience the quieter side of the valley.
For me, that's the attraction.
No big tourist attraction. No rush.
Just a 4WD, a mountain track, good company and a few hours exploring wherever the trail takes you.
