Some places are worth visiting for the scenery.

Others are worth visiting because the rocks themselves tell a story.

Wadi Saham is one of those places.

Located in Fujairah, UAE, Wadi Saham is a seasonal water stream surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Hajar Mountains. But what makes this wadi particularly fascinating for me is what has been left behind on its rocks.

Ancient petroglyphs.

When you stand in front of these carvings, it is incredible to think that people were here thousands of years ago, leaving their marks on the same landscape we are exploring today.

🪨 The Rock With 26 Petroglyphs

The main collection of petroglyphs in Wadi Saham is concentrated on one large rock beside the road.

Across its four faces are 26 petroglyphs.

The carvings include a remarkable number of horse riders, along with geometric shapes such as:

• I-shaped figures

• Cruciform designs

• Animal representations

• Snake motifs

For me, this is what makes the place so interesting.

You aren't looking at a modern interpretation of history.

You're looking directly at marks made by people who lived here thousands of years ago.

🐍 The Snake Motif

One of the fascinating carvings found here is a snake motif.

Snake designs are noted as a common characteristic of Iron Age decoration in the UAE.

When you see a carving like this on an ancient rock, it makes you wonder about its meaning.

Was it symbolic?

Was it decorative?

Did it represent something important to the people who created it?

We may never know exactly.

And perhaps that's part of the attraction.

🐎 Ancient Horse Riders

The large number of horse-rider depictions is particularly interesting.

The petroglyphs in Fujairah provide valuable insights into the people who occupied the region in the past.

The material in our original notes dates the Wadi Saham petroglyphs to approximately 1300–300 BCE, with some interpretations suggesting that certain carvings may date as far back as the Bronze Age.

That means you're potentially looking at artwork created more than 2,000 years ago.

Generations have come and gone.

The landscape has changed.

But these marks remain on the rock.

Wadi Saham is a seasonal watercourse, and the rugged mountain environment gives you a completely different perspective of Fujairah.

This is not the polished, modern UAE you see in the cities.

Here, the mountains dominate the landscape.

And somewhere among those rocks are traces of people who lived here long before the UAE existed as a modern nation.
