About this trail

๐Ÿ“ About this Trail

Every October, something changes in the UAE.

The scorching summer slowly fades away, mornings become cooler, and suddenly everyone starts talking about hiking season again. For outdoor enthusiasts, it's one of the most exciting times of the year. The mountains come alive, hiking groups return, and weekends are no longer spent indoors.

This was the perfect opportunity to finally explore one of the UAE's most iconic mountain trails Wadi Naqab to Sheri Village.

Unlike many scenic hikes in the Emirates, this trail isn't just about reaching a summit. It's a journey through narrow wadis, ancient mountain paths, traditional farming villages, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Hajar Mountains.

Our day started much earlier than most people would imagine.

The alarm rang at 3:30 AM.

By 5:00 AM, our group of twelve hikers had gathered at the designated parking area. While everyone adjusted backpacks, checked water supplies, and greeted familiar faces, our hike leader explained the day's route, safety procedures, and what to expect along the way.

By 5:30 AM, we were walking.

The first section follows the wide wadi floor, weaving through enormous boulders shaped by centuries of flash floods. Although the route looks straightforward, the rocky terrain constantly demands your attention. Every step matters.

One thing that impressed me immediately was how untouched the landscape felt.

There are no cafรฉs.

No ticket counters.

No souvenir shops.

Just mountains, silence, and the occasional sound of birds echoing through the valley.

As we continued deeper into Wadi Naqab, the scenery began to change. Towering cliffs surrounded us while the trail gradually became steeper. Eventually we reached one of the most memorable parts of the hike an ancient stone stairway carved into the mountainside.

Climbing these old steps felt like walking through history.

Long before modern hiking boots and GPS watches, local villagers used these same paths to travel between settlements, transport supplies, and tend to their farms.

After a steady climb, we finally reached the plateau.

The view was worth every step.

Hidden among the mountains were small villages where families continue to practice traditional farming despite the harsh landscape. It's remarkable to see agriculture thriving in places that appear almost impossible to reach.

One of the best parts of the day wasn't the summit itself.

It was what happened afterwards.

We all sat together for nearly half an hour, sharing fruit, snacks, stories, and laughter while overlooking the endless mountain ranges. Strangers at sunrise had become friends by lunchtime.

The descent, however, taught me something new.

I always assumed climbing uphill was the hardest part of hiking.

I was wrong.

Walking downhill on loose rocks requires a completely different set of skills. Balance, patience, and proper foot placement become even more important than strength.

By the time we reached the parking area, my legs were tired, but my mind was already planning the next hike.

Wadi Naqab isn't simply another mountain trail.

It's one of those adventures that quietly reminds you how rewarding it is to leave the city behind and spend a day surrounded by nature.

Wadi Naqab is considered one of the UAE's finest mountain hikes.
