Some places are beautiful because they are full of life.

Wadi Bani Habib is beautiful because life has moved on, but the village remains.

High in the mountains of Jabal Al Akhdar, part of the Al Hajar mountain range near Nizwa, sits this remarkable abandoned village.

At around 2,000 metres above sea level, the old stone-and-mud houses cling to the rocky sides of the valley, surrounded by fruit trees and the dramatic Green Mountain landscape.

When I first think about a place like this, I don't think of it as simply an abandoned village.

I think about the families who once lived here.

Children growing up among these mountains.

Farmers tending to pomegranate and apricot trees.

People walking through the narrow paths between the houses.

And then, gradually, modern life changed everything.

The residents left.

The houses were abandoned.

And today, we're able to walk through what feels like a village frozen in time.

🏚️ The Lost Village

Wadi Bani Habib is essentially a ruined mountain settlement wrapped around the bottom of the valley.

The old houses are built into the rocky landscape, giving the village a fascinating appearance.

The stone and mud construction also has a practical side.

When you enter some of the old rooms, you can immediately notice how much cooler the interiors feel compared with the outside.

Standing inside one of these abandoned houses, I couldn't help imagining what daily life must have been like here.

There are no modern comforts.

No busy roads.

Just stone walls, mountain air and the surrounding farms.

It feels like the clock stopped when the villagers left.

🥾 The Walk Into the Village

Reaching Wadi Bani Habib is relatively straightforward, but there is one thing you need to be prepared for.

Stairs. Lots of them.

You need to climb a large number of steps to reach the base of the wadi.

After that, a short trek takes you towards the first houses of the abandoned settlement.

The walk itself is part of the experience.

As you descend towards the old village, the modern world gradually disappears behind you.

And then the old houses begin to appear.

🌳 Pomegranate & Apricot Orchards

One of the things that makes the village particularly interesting is that it wasn't simply built in the mountains.

It was supported by agriculture.

Pomegranate and apricot orchards helped sustain the communities that lived here.

Even today, seeing greenery among these dramatic mountain slopes makes you understand why the area could support village life.

The combination of:

💧 Traditional irrigation

creates an incredibly atmospheric landscape.

💧 The Falaj Irrigation System

The traditional Falaj irrigation system is another fascinating part of the story.

Water was distributed towards the agricultural land through this traditional irrigation network.

When you think about farming at an altitude of around 2,000 metres in a mountainous environment, you begin to appreciate how important water management must have been.

The Falaj system wasn't simply an irrigation method.

It was part of the foundation of village life.
