Sometimes you don't need a long drive, a difficult hike or a big adventure.

You just need somewhere quiet.

Sweihan Pond is a small natural pond surrounded by the desert in Sweihan, Abu Dhabi. What makes it interesting is the sudden change in landscape. For kilometres, all you see is dry desert and sand, and then you come across this small patch of water surrounded by greenery.

We visited the pond simply to spend some time away from the usual city routine.

There's not much to do here and that's actually the attraction.

You can park nearby, sit with friends or family, have some food, take photographs and simply enjoy the silence. The pond is relatively remote and, according to our experience, can retain water for much of the year.

The journey is also part of the experience.

As you leave the paved roads and head towards Sweihan, the surroundings gradually become more desert-like. If you're travelling by 4x4, you can make the trip more adventurous by exploring the surrounding dunes before reaching the pond.

We enjoyed taking a few stops along the way, especially when the desert opened up into wide stretches of red and golden sand.

After spending time in the dunes, reaching the green patch around the pond feels almost unexpected.

For me, that's what makes Sweihan Pond special.

It's not a major tourist attraction or a place where you need a full itinerary.

It's simply a peaceful little escape in the middle of the desert.

💡 Gypsy Overlanding Family Tip

Don't expect Sweihan Pond to be a place filled with activities.

That's exactly why I like it.

Drive into the desert, find the pond, put the chairs outside and spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing.

Sometimes a small pond in the middle of nowhere is all you need to slow down.

No crowds. No schedule. Just desert, water and good company.
