October to April is the most comfortable period for camping and exploring the Sugar Dunes.

Winter nights can be surprisingly cool, so carry warm clothing if you're camping.

🌌 Night – One of the best reasons to camp here is the incredible open sky away from city lights.

🌦️ Weather

Al Khaluf is an exposed coastal environment, so expect wind and changing conditions.

The combination of sea, sand and wind can make driving conditions change quickly.

Check the weather before entering the dunes and avoid driving into unfamiliar areas during poor visibility.

Al Khaluf is approximately five hours from Muscat by road.

The journey takes you towards Mahout and Al Wusta, eventually reaching the small fishing village of Al Khaluf.

From the village, the route towards the Sugar Dunes includes a long beach section of more than 10 km.

🚨 Convoy Recommended

We strongly recommend travelling with at least three vehicles.

Remote soft-sand recovery is much more difficult when you're travelling alone, and there may be very little help nearby.

• Never travel alone.

• Go with a convoy of at least three vehicles.

• Deflate tyres before entering soft sand.

• Carry recovery equipment.

• Fill the fuel tank before entering the remote area.

• Carry enough water and food for the entire trip.

• Watch the tide when driving along the beach.

• Don't drive into unfamiliar wet sand.

• Keep a safe distance from the sea.

• Take all rubbish back with you.

The Sugar Dunes are one of those places where the destination is only half the experience.

The other half is the journey.

Five hours on the road, more than 10 km along the beach, soft sand that tests your 4WD and the constant need to watch your tyres and terrain.

Then you finally park the vehicle.

The engines stop.

The sea is beside you, white dunes are behind you and the stars slowly appear above.

That's when you realise why people drive all this way for a desert that looks like sugar.
