About this trail

📍 About this Trail

Some desert landscapes are all about golden sand.

Al Khaluf is completely different.

The first thing you'll notice is the contrast—the bright white dunes meeting the deep blue Arabian Sea. Located near the small fishing village of Al Khaluf, the famous Sugar Dunes are one of those places that feel almost unreal when you arrive.

The journey from Muscat takes around five hours, but the adventure really begins as you get closer to Al Khaluf.

Before reaching the Sugar Dunes, we drove along more than 10 km of beach, with the sea on one side and the vast coastal landscape on the other.

It's one of those drives where you naturally slow down.

There are no busy roads or buildings around you. Just sand, sea and the sound of waves.

Eventually, the white dunes begin to appear.

The large, soft sand dunes rising behind Al Khaluf are what give this place its famous Sugar Dunes name. The pure white sand against the blue coastline creates an incredible landscape, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Nearby, you can also explore the Al Khaluf Caves, adding another interesting stop to the journey.

But the real magic happens after sunset.

We set up camp between the ocean and the white dunes. Once darkness arrived, the landscape completely changed. With very little light pollution around, the night sky opened up above us.

Sitting between the sea and the white dunes, looking at thousands of stars, was one of those moments that makes the long drive completely worthwhile.

The sand here is extremely soft.

That means this isn't a place where you simply drive in with any vehicle and hope for the best. A 4×4 is essential, and travelling as a convoy is strongly recommended. If one vehicle gets stuck in the soft sand, having another properly equipped vehicle nearby can make all the difference.

Sugar Dunes isn't for everyone.

It's remote, it's quiet and it requires preparation.

But if you enjoy camping, overlanding and exploring places away from the crowds, this is one Oman destination that deserves a place on your list.
