About this trail

πŸ“ About this Trail

Some desert drives are about chasing big dunes.

Others are about crossing the desert and seeing how the landscape changes along the way.

Our drive from Starfish towards Al Quaa was one of those trips. We started from the familiar Starfish area and headed deeper into the desert, leaving the busier tracks behind and following a mixture of open sand, rolling dunes and desert tracks.

The further we travelled, the quieter it became.

The landscape kept changing as we crossed the dunes. Some sections were smooth and flowing, while others required more attention, especially when climbing dune faces and travelling along ridges.

For me, this is where desert driving becomes enjoyable.

It's not simply about putting the vehicle into 4WD and driving over every dune you see. You need to read the sand, understand the shape of the dunes, maintain momentum and know when to slow down or take another line.

As we moved towards Al Quaa, the feeling of being away from the city became stronger. Long stretches of untouched desert opened around us, with only occasional vegetation and distant tracks breaking the landscape.

We stopped several times for photographs, short breaks and to let the vehicles cool down.

By the time we reached the Al Quaa side, the drive felt less like a simple weekend outing and more like a proper desert crossing.

That's what I enjoyed most.

The destination was Al Quaa, but the real experience was everything between Starfish and there.

πŸ’‘ Gypsy Overlanding Family Tip

Don't make the mistake of thinking the fastest way across the desert is the best way.

Slow down.

Read the dunes. Watch how the sand changes. Let the more experienced drivers choose the line and learn from them.

There will be climbs, soft patches, stuck vehicles and unexpected detours.

And that's exactly why we go.

The best desert drives aren't measured by kilometresβ€”they're measured by the stories you bring back.
