About this trail
๐ About this Trail
Masirah Island is usually associated with long beaches, sea turtles, fishing villages and wild coastal landscapes.
But there is another side of the island that is easy to miss.
The mountains.
During our exploration of Masirah Island, we headed towards the Red Mountain area near Al Ghiray. The landscape quickly changed from coastal plains to rocky hills, with reddish rock formations standing out against the surrounding pale desert.
The trail is a proper mountain walk rather than a simple viewpoint stop. One mapped Red Mount route is around 11.9 km, with approximately 255 m of elevation gain, and is rated moderate.
What makes the hike interesting is the geology.
The mountain has a rugged, almost desert-like appearance, with exposed rock, loose scree and flat-topped sections. As you climb higher, the view opens across the island, giving you a completely different perspective of Masirah.
The island itself is about 95 km long, with a central spine of hills and extensive coastal plains.
There are also other small red-mountain formations and caves around the Al Ghiray area, so this is a place worth exploring rather than simply arriving, taking one photograph and leaving.
For me, that is what makes Masirah interesting.
You can spend the morning on the beach, drive across the island and then find yourself climbing a rocky mountain a few hours later.
Sea, desert and mountains, all on the same island.
๐ก Gypsy Overlanding Family Tip
When we think about an island adventure, we normally imagine beaches.
Masirah reminded me that you should always look inland.
After spending time along the coast, turning towards the mountains completely changed the experience. The sea disappeared behind us, the terrain became rocky and suddenly we were standing on a mountain looking across the island.
That's the beauty of Masirah one island, but many different landscapes to explore.
