About this trail
Masafi is a small mountain town sitting in the Al Hajar Mountains, close to the Fujairah–Ras Al Khaimah border.
Hidden along an unpaved road is Masafi Fort, a small historic fort that was built during the 19th century.
Protecting the Mountain Oasis
The fort is believed to have been built to protect the Masafi oasis, an important location connecting the eastern and western sides of the Al Hajar Mountains.
What makes the fort interesting to me isn't just the structure.
It is the underground water system.
These old water systems show how people used traditional techniques to manage and access water in the mountains long before modern infrastructure.
The fort was restored in 2012.
Visiting Masafi Fort
Access to the fort was free during daytime when I visited, although visitors were required to sign the guard's guestbook.
From the main road, follow the signboard onto the unpaved road leading towards the fort.
It is a simple stop, but worth adding to a mountain drive through Masafi.
🛍️ Don't Miss Masafi Friday Market
While you're in Masafi, the Friday Market is another interesting stop.
Despite its name, the market operates throughout the week and is popular with visitors looking for plants, carpets, pots, toys, fruits and vegetables.
There are also places nearby where families can stop for lunch and spend some time outdoors.
Gypsy Overlanding Family Tip ❤️
Masafi Fort isn't a huge attraction, and that's exactly why I liked it.
It is a small reminder of how people lived in the mountains, protected their communities and managed something as precious as water.
Sometimes the smallest places reveal the biggest stories.
