About this trail
📍 About this Trail
Every off-roader in the UAE has a route they never get tired of driving.
For me, it's the journey from Margham to Fossil Rock.
No matter how many times I drive it, the desert always looks different. One week the dunes are sharp and well defined. After a windy day, everything changes. Old tracks disappear, new ridges appear, and the desert feels like a completely new playground.
Our trip usually begins from Margham, where the tyre pressure comes down, the centre differential gets locked, and the real adventure begins.
The first few kilometres are gentle enough to settle into the rhythm of desert driving. Small rolling dunes gradually become taller, the bowls become deeper, and before long you're weaving through some of the most enjoyable desert terrain in the northern Emirates.
I drove this route in a Toyota Land Cruiser, a vehicle that's perfectly suited for long desert crossings. It has enough power for dune climbs while remaining comfortable for slow technical driving through the softer sections.
What I enjoy most isn't racing over the dunes.
It's finding the flow.
Reading the sand, choosing the next ridge, linking one dune to another, and letting the vehicle glide naturally across the landscape.
As you continue towards Mleiha, the scenery slowly changes. The massive limestone ridge of Fossil Rock begins to appear on the horizon, acting like a natural landmark guiding you through the desert. Long before GPS, this distinctive rock formation helped travellers navigate across the region.
The closer you get, the more dramatic the landscape becomes.
Red dunes surround the ancient limestone outcrop, creating one of the most iconic off-road destinations in the UAE. Fossil Rock itself was once part of an ancient seabed, and even today you can find fossilised marine shells embedded within the limestone, evidence that this entire desert lay beneath the ocean millions of years ago.
One of my favourite moments is parking near the base of the rock and climbing to one of the viewpoints.
From the top, endless dunes stretch towards Margham while the Hajar Mountains rise in the distance. It's one of those views that reminds you why off-roading is about much more than simply driving.
This route offers something for everyone.
Beginners can enjoy the gentler dunes near Margham, while experienced drivers can challenge themselves on the larger bowls and technical climbs around Fossil Rock. The mix of firm sand, soft pockets, and rolling dunes keeps every kilometre interesting.
Whether you're exploring with friends, joining an off-road club, or simply spending a winter morning in the desert, the Margham to Fossil Rock route is one of those classic UAE drives that never disappoints.
