There are deserts...

And then there's Liwa.

The first time I drove into Liwa, I realised why people call it the edge of the Empty Quarter. The dunes seemed endless. Every direction looked the same—waves of golden sand stretching far beyond the horizon. It's the kind of place that makes you feel incredibly small.

Our destination was the legendary Moreeb Dune, one of the tallest sand dunes in the world and one of the most iconic off-road destinations in the UAE.

The journey itself is part of the adventure.

Leaving the paved road behind, we entered a landscape where every dune was larger than the last. The sand was softer than anywhere I'd driven before, demanding patience, momentum, and careful throttle control. Liwa doesn't forgive rushed decisions, but it rewards smooth driving and respect for the desert.

As we approached Moreeb Dune, its size became almost impossible to comprehend.

Standing at its base and looking up, it feels less like a sand dune and more like a mountain made entirely of sand. During the famous Moreeb Dune Festival, powerful 4WDs, buggies, motorcycles, and custom-built vehicles attempt to conquer its steep slopes, attracting motorsport enthusiasts from across the region.

But you don't have to climb Moreeb to enjoy Liwa.

One of my favourite moments happened just before sunset.

We parked on a nearby dune, switched off the engines, and watched the sun slowly disappear behind the endless sea of sand. As the light changed from gold to orange and finally deep red, the entire desert seemed to glow.

Later that night, we set up camp beneath one of the clearest skies I've ever seen.

No city lights.

No traffic.

Just silence, stars, and the occasional sound of the wind moving across the dunes.

Liwa isn't simply another desert drive.

It's an experience that reminds you how vast, peaceful, and untouched nature can still be.
