Kabbe Hills & Choma Kunda | Coorg 4x4 Trail

📍 About this Trail

There are mountain drives where the destination is the attraction, and then there are trails where the drive itself is the adventure.

This route in Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka, takes you through the Western Ghats around Chelavara and Kakkabe, climbing towards the Kabbe Hills and Choma Kunda (Chomakund) Peak.

The route begins at around 1,077 metres, climbs to approximately 1,276 metres, and then descends to around 884 metres.

Looking at the route on the map, the trail is tightly winding, with several sharp turns and sudden elevation changes. You can already understand from the route geometry that this isn't a simple hill road.

But there is one important thing to remember before planning this drive:

⚠️ Parts of this trail pass through private property. Permission is required before entering.

Please don't assume that having a GPS track means you have permission to drive the route. Speak to the landowners or local authorities and obtain the necessary permission before attempting the trail.

Once permission is secured, the landscape is what makes this route special.

The Western Ghats here are rugged, green and constantly changing. The trail can include deep rain ruts, loose gravel, rocky sections and slippery clay, particularly during and after the monsoon.

This is where having the right vehicle and the right experience really matters.

🚙 The Off-Road Experience

This isn't a route I'd recommend for a standard road car.

The steep climbs, uneven surfaces and changing trail conditions demand a proper 4x4 with good ground clearance and suitable tyres.

Vehicles such as a Mahindra Thar, Maruti Gypsy or modified Jeep are better suited to this type of terrain.

And even with a capable vehicle, the driver needs to understand the trail.

There is no point attacking every climb with speed.

Sometimes the better approach is simply to stop, walk the section, understand the surface and then choose the right line.

That is what makes mountain off-roading different from normal driving.

⛰️ The Scenic Payoff

The effort is rewarded when the trail reaches the higher sections.

The Kabbe Hills and Choma Kunda area offer wide mountain views, with mist-covered forests, coffee estates and rolling Western Ghats landscapes.

On a clear day, the views can stretch towards the Kerala side of the Western Ghats.

And if you're lucky enough to be above the clouds, the experience becomes something completely different.

You stop thinking about the difficult climb.

You simply stand there and look.
