About this trail
📍 About this Trail
Some hikes are about reaching a summit.
The Jebel Shams Balcony Walk is different. Here, the views are the destination.
We drove deep into the Hajar Mountains towards Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, and eventually reached the small mountain village of Al Khitaym, where the famous W6 Balcony Walk begins.
The moment we started walking, the landscape changed completely.
The trail follows the edge of Wadi Nakhr, often called the Grand Canyon of Oman. On one side is the enormous canyon; on the other, steep mountain walls rise above the trail. The scale is difficult to understand until you're actually standing there.
The trail itself isn't technically difficult, but it doesn't feel like an ordinary walk either.
The path is rocky and uneven, with several exposed sections. In some places, the canyon drops dramatically beside you, so you naturally slow down and pay attention to every step.
As we continued along the mountain edge, the views kept changing.
Far below, the canyon looked almost endless. Across the valley, enormous cliffs revealed layers of rock shaped over thousands of years. Every few minutes we found another place to stop for photographs.
The trail eventually heads towards the remains of Sab Bani Khamis, an abandoned mountain settlement. Reaching this area gives the hike another dimension you aren't just walking through spectacular scenery, you're walking through a landscape where people once lived and farmed high in these mountains.
The return journey is where you really feel the hike.
The outward section is generally easier, while the way back involves more uphill walking. There is also very little shade, so starting early makes a big difference. Current trail guides put the round trip at roughly 8 km, with most hikers taking around 3–4 hours, depending on pace and stops.
For me, the Balcony Walk is one of those trails where you don't need to reach the end to feel satisfied.
Even the first section gives you views that are worth the journey to Jebel Shams.
💡 Gypsy Overlanding Family Tip
Don't look at the Balcony Walk as a race to reach the abandoned village.
The best part starts almost immediately.
Walk slowly, stop at the viewpoints and look across the canyon. The mountains are so enormous that even after walking for an hour, the landscape still feels completely unchanged.
And when you finally turn around and start walking back, you'll realise something:
The journey back is just as beautiful as the journey in.
