About this trail
There are some places where you go, take a few photographs and leave.
And then there are places where you stand quietly for a few minutes and suddenly realise that people were living, trading, farming and protecting their families here thousands of years before the roads, buildings and cities we know today.
Shimal is one of those places.
Located in the northern part of Ras Al Khaimah, Shimal is a small settlement surrounded by mountains, palm gardens and some of the UAE's most important archaeological remains.
When I first look at a place like this, I don't just see old stones.
I try to imagine the people who once stood here.
The traders who travelled through this region.
The families who lived around the palm oasis.
The people who climbed this rocky ridge looking for safety.
And the rulers who once looked down over the settlement from above.
A Place With Thousands of Years of History
Shimal is particularly fascinating because its history stretches across several very different periods.
The archaeological evidence around Shimal includes major prehistoric tombs from the Umm Al-Nar period (2600–2000 BC) and large Wadi Suq tombs dating roughly from 2000–1600 BC. The area also contains evidence from the Late Bronze Age, including a settlement dating to around 1600–1250 BC.
So when we say Shimal is an ancient place, we are talking about thousands of years of continuous human history.
That is what makes this landscape so special.
The mountains haven't changed dramatically.
The palm oasis is still part of the landscape.
And scattered among them are the remains of the people who called this place home.
The “Queen of Sheeba's Palace”
The name immediately catches your attention.
Queen of Sheeba's Palace.
It sounds like something from a legend.
But the actual history is even more interesting.
The palace standing above Shimal is a medieval Islamic palace from the Julfar period, generally dated between the 13th and 16th centuries AD.
Archaeologists believe it was most probably the residence of the ruler of Julfar, the prosperous trading settlement that became one of the most important ports in the Lower Gulf.
The connection with the Queen of Sheba is actually a local legend.
There is no archaeological evidence that this palace belonged to the famous Queen of Sheba, who is traditionally associated with the Kingdom of Marib in Yemen around 1000 BC.
Still, I like the name.
Because when you're standing on the rocky ridge looking across Shimal, it is easy to understand how stories and legends could become attached to a place like this.
Place: Shimal, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE
Coordinates: 25°49’08.6″N 56°02’02.0″E
Type: Historic Palace, Fortification & Archaeological Site
Best Time to Visit: October to April especially November to February
The location makes perfect sense.
The palace sits on a rocky spur overlooking Shimal.
From here, you get a commanding view of the surrounding area.
That gave the occupants two important advantages:
Defence and climate.
The elevated position provided a strategic location, while the higher ground offered cooler air compared with the surrounding lowlands.
Standing there, I could understand why someone centuries ago would choose this exact spot.
You can see the landscape.
You can watch the approaches.
And you can look down towards the palm gardens below.
It doesn't feel like a random place chosen for a building.
It feels chosen deliberately.
