Some forts stand proudly with towering walls and crowded entrances.

Others slowly disappear into nature, waiting for curious travellers to rediscover them.

Dhuruvan Fort, located near Gengavaram, is one such place.

I first heard about this fort from fellow trekkers who described it as "a forgotten hill where history sleeps." That description stayed with me. A few weeks later, we packed our backpacks, started the car before sunrise, and headed towards Gengavaram without knowing exactly what to expect.

Unlike famous forts where signboards guide every step, Dhuruvan Fort makes you earn the experience.

The drive through quiet villages is peaceful, and before long, the hill comes into view. From a distance it doesn't look like an ancient fortress. It looks like any other rocky hill in rural Tamil Nadu. Only when you begin climbing do you realise this hill once played an important role in protecting the surrounding region.

The trail is a pleasant mix of rocky paths, exposed granite, and patches of dry forest. Birds replace the noise of traffic, and every few minutes the landscape opens up to reveal endless green fields stretching towards the horizon.

The climb isn't technically difficult, but it keeps you engaged.

Every turn reveals something different.

Old stone walls.

Scattered foundation stones.

Rock-cut steps worn smooth by generations of footsteps.

These silent remains remind you that this hill wasn't just climbed by trekkers, it was once walked by soldiers, messengers, traders, and rulers during the Chola period.

Although much of the fort has disappeared over time, traces of defensive walls and stone structures can still be found. Standing on the summit, it's easy to understand why this location was chosen centuries ago. The panoramic view allows you to see for miles in every direction, making it an ideal lookout point.

One of my favourite moments came after reaching the top.

There were no crowds.

No ticket counters.

No loud music.

Just the sound of the wind moving across the rocks.

It's amazing how many hidden historical places still exist in Tamil Nadu without receiving the attention they deserve.

Whether the fort was protecting trade routes, acting as a military outpost, or serving local rulers, one thing is certain, it continues to tell its story to anyone willing to make the climb.

Dhuruvan Fort isn't about impressive architecture.

It's about experiencing history where it actually happened.
