If you're looking for a simple family day trip during the holidays, Falaj Al Mualla Fort is a great option.
Located about 30 km from Umm Al Quwain city, this 19th-century fort sits in the oasis town of Falaj Al Mualla.
A Fort Built to Protect the Oasis
The fort is believed to date back to 1825.
With its round and rectangular towers, together with three watchtowers, it was built to protect the fertile land around the oasis.
The name Falaj Al Mualla itself is connected to water — falaj refers to a traditional water channel.
The area was made fertile by water flowing down from the Hajar Mountains.
Al Hasen Museum
The fort is more than just an old building.
Inside, the Al Hasen Museum gives you a glimpse into traditional Emirati life.
You can explore rooms displaying:
⚔️ Old weapons
🧵 Traditional crafts and jewellery
🌊 Fishing and pearl-diving equipment
📷 Old photographs, radios and telephones
🛍️ A traditional market
☕ A traditional coffee shop
🏜️ Bedouin life and tools
👩🍼 A traditional Sheikha's room
One of the interesting sections is the Sea Room, which shows how fishing and pearl diving were an important part of life in Umm Al Quwain.
A Nice Place With Kids
What makes this place interesting for families is that children can see history rather than just read about it.
Walking through the fort, seeing the old rooms, tools and everyday objects makes traditional Emirati life easier to understand.
It's a simple visit, but there is plenty to discover.
You don't always need a big adventure for a memorable family day.
Sometimes, exploring an old fort, learning a little history and spending time together is enough.
Take the kids, slow down and let them discover how life was lived before the modern UAE.
