About this trail
📍 About This Place
Some desert drives are about the challenge.
Some are about reaching a particular destination.
And then there are places where the road itself becomes the experience.
Exit 55 on Dubai's Half Desert Road is one of those places I remember for its incredible sense of openness.
As we moved away from the busy roads and deeper into the desert, the landscape slowly changed. The buildings disappeared, the traffic disappeared and eventually it felt like there was nothing around us except sand dunes, sky and a lonely road stretching into the distance.
There is something strangely beautiful about a road like this.
It feels quiet.
It feels endless.
And for a few moments, you forget that you're actually so close to Dubai.
🏜️ A Lonely Road Through the Desert
The first thing that caught my attention was the road.
A simple stretch of asphalt surrounded by endless sand dunes.
No buildings.
No crowds.
Just the road cutting through the desert.
I stopped more than once simply to look at the landscape.
The desert here feels vast, untouched and almost surreal.
When the sunlight hits the dunes, the colours and shadows keep changing, and the same road can look completely different a few minutes later.
This is the kind of place where you don't need a destination.
The journey is enough.
🚙 4x4 Desert Exploration
The surrounding desert also makes this an interesting location for people who enjoy 4x4 exploration.
Once you leave the main road, the character of the drive changes completely.
The soft sand and dunes demand a different style of driving compared with normal roads.
For anyone new to desert driving, this isn't the place to underestimate the terrain.
Sand can look smooth and easy from a distance, but the dunes can quickly become challenging.
A capable 4x4 or AWD vehicle, appropriate tyre pressures and basic recovery equipment make the experience much safer.
🏕️ Camping in the Half Desert
This landscape also creates an amazing setting for desert camping.
Imagine arriving in the evening, setting up your camp away from the city lights and watching the desert change as the sun disappears.
Then the night arrives.
The noise of Dubai feels far away.
The sky becomes darker.
And the dunes become silhouettes against the stars.
For me, this is when the Half Desert really shows its character.
The desert feels completely different after sunset.
🌅 Sunrise & Sunset
If you are planning a visit, try to experience either sunrise or sunset.
The low-angle light creates long shadows across the dunes and gives the landscape a completely different feeling.
Sunset is particularly special when the road disappears towards the horizon.
It makes for one of those photographs where you can almost feel how quiet the place is.
I'd recommend this area for:
