About this trail
π About this Trail
Some off-road trails look harmless when you first see them.
Esfini is not one of them.
Located in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, the Esfini area offers a mix of rocky tracks, steep climbs, mountain farms and beautiful valley scenery. The entrance looks like an ordinary dirt road, but within a short distance the character of the trail changes completely.
We started the drive expecting a relaxed mountain exploration. The first section takes you towards the farms, but then comes the part that makes Esfini memorableβa steep rocky climb followed by an equally steep descent.
This is where you need to slow down.
Loose rocks, uneven surfaces and steep gradients mean that the vehicle needs to be handled carefully. For this type of terrain, 4L and properly deflated tyres can make a big difference. Experienced trail reports also describe sections requiring more capable off-road tyres and, on some routes, lockers.
After the first challenging section, the landscape opens into a mountain valley dotted with farms and greenery. This was one of my favourite parts of Esfini. Instead of constantly focusing on the obstacle ahead, you can finally slow down and appreciate the Hajar Mountain landscape.
There are also smaller mountain tracks branching through the area, and some sections provide opportunities for camping in the valleys.
The route can connect towards Shawka, with some versions of the trail offering a relatively easier drive suitable for beginners.
But Esfini itself deserves respect.
It's not a trail I'd recommend for someone attempting their first-ever mountain drive. The steep sections can become particularly challenging after rain, and the rocky terrain demands a properly equipped vehicle and an experienced driver.
For me, that's what makes Esfini interesting.
It's not about conquering the mountain.
It's about understanding the terrain, choosing the right line, and knowing when to continue and when to turn around.
