October to April is generally the more comfortable period for an outdoor trip.

Barr Al Hikman is an exposed coastal-desert environment.

Conditions can change quickly, particularly with wind and tides. Check the weather and sea conditions before entering remote coastal areas.

Avoid driving through unknown water or soft mud simply because another vehicle has crossed it before.

From Muscat, drive towards Mahout in Al Wusta Governorate, then continue towards the Hikman Peninsula.

You can approach the area through Ash Sharqiyah towards Al Wusta, with Al Khaluf serving as an important fishing settlement and access area.

The final sections can involve remote sand, mud and coastal terrain.

Before entering Barr Al Hikman:

1. 4×4 is essential.

2. Understand sand, mud and seawater terrain.

3. Fill your fuel tank before entering.

4. Carry enough drinking water and food.

5. Travel with another vehicle if possible.

6. Don't drive blindly across tidal flats.

7. Check weather and coastal conditions.

8. Respect birds, turtles and other wildlife.

9. Take all rubbish back with you.

10. Don't leave your vehicle without considering the tide and return route.

Barr Al Hikman taught me that remote travel is not about how far you can drive.

It's about knowing the terrain before you enter it.

The sand, mud and seawater can look harmless from a distance, but they can quickly turn a beautiful drive into a serious recovery situation.

Take it slowly, keep an eye on the tide, stay together as a convoy and don't try to prove anything to the desert.

Once you've reached the coast and the engines are switched off, sit back and watch the birds moving across the water.

That's when you realise why the long drive was worth it.
