Every desert trip starts with excitement.

But the best ones don't always go according to plan.

Our overlanding journey began early in the morning from Al Lisaili, a quiet desert settlement on the outskirts of Dubai. While many people know it for its camel farms and racing heritage, it's also one of the best starting points for exploring the vast desert towards Al Qudra.

We were a convoy of three 4WD vehicles, meeting just after sunrise as the cool desert breeze drifted across the sand. After lowering tyre pressures and a quick safety briefing, we left the last stretch of tarmac behind and entered the dunes.

The first few kilometres were perfect for warming up.

Gentle dune crossings, long ridges, and soft flowing sand made the drive enjoyable without being overly technical. As our confidence grew, the terrain became more interesting, with rolling dunes that challenged our driving while rewarding us with beautiful desert views.

One of the highlights of this route was the wildlife.

As we crossed the Al Marmoom Desert, we spotted a small group of Arabian oryx running across the dunes, a reminder that the desert is far more alive than it first appears. Not long afterwards, we passed tracks used daily by local camel farms, watching a few camels slowly making their way across the sand.

Then came the unexpected.

Around midday, one of our 4WD vehicles suddenly lost its four-wheel-drive system. We were deep inside the desert with no road in sight.

Instead of pushing forward, we made the decision to turn back.

Recovery in the desert is never as simple as it looks. Towing a heavy SUV across soft sand requires patience, teamwork, and clear communication. It took several hours, plenty of recovery gear, and a lot of determination before we finally reached solid ground.

By the time we aired up our tyres, everyone was exhausted.

But nobody complained.

The recovery became the most valuable part of the trip.

It reminded us that overlanding isn't just about beautiful landscapes—it's about preparation, teamwork, problem-solving, and staying calm when things don't go as planned.

Looking back, I don't remember the stuck vehicle as a bad experience.

I remember the friends who stayed together until everyone made it home safely.

And that's what overlanding is really about.
