Al Hamra Watch Tower Trail – Explore the Hidden Ancient Watchtower in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

Every off-road trip doesn't have to end at a mountain peak or a campsite.

Sometimes, it ends at a forgotten watchtower that has silently guarded the landscape for centuries.

Our journey to Al Hamra Rachellee Watch Tower started with a simple idea—let's explore something different in Ras Al Khaimah. Instead of chasing mountain trails or dune drives, we wanted to find one of the UAE's lesser-known historical landmarks tucked away from the main roads.

Located near Al Hamra Village, this ancient watchtower sits on a small hill overlooking the surrounding landscape. From a distance it doesn't seem particularly impressive, but as you get closer, you begin to appreciate why it was built here. The elevated position offers a clear view across the surrounding plains, making it an ideal lookout point in earlier times.

The drive itself became part of the adventure.

After leaving Sheikh Muhammad Bin Salem Road, we followed a small dirt track towards the hill. At first, the route looked straightforward. But as we got closer, the sand became much softer than expected.

Like many off-road adventures, things rarely go exactly as planned.

On our first attempt to climb the sandy slope, the vehicle quickly lost momentum. We reversed back onto firmer ground, reduced the tyre pressure to 25 PSI, took a slightly wider line, and tried again with a bit more momentum.

Second attempt.

Success.

Moments like these are what make overlanding memorable. It's not about how difficult the obstacle is, but about reading the terrain, adapting, and enjoying the challenge.

Once we reached the top, we parked the vehicle and spent time exploring the area around the tower.

Nearby, we found several fossils, handmade artefacts, and archaeological displays placed in an open area for visitors. While they aren't part of a formal museum, they add another layer of interest to the site and remind you of the region's rich history.

The tower itself has survived remarkably well considering its age.

Visitors can walk around the outside and admire the traditional construction, but access to the interior is restricted. Given the tower's age, this is understandable. Preserving these structures is far more important than allowing people to climb inside.

Standing beside the tower, with views stretching across Ras Al Khaimah, it was easy to imagine how guards once watched over trade routes, nearby settlements, and approaching travellers.

Today, the tower serves a different purpose.

Instead of protecting villages, it quietly reminds us that some of the UAE's most fascinating places are often hidden just a few hundred metres away from the main road.
