📍 About Al Bidya Mosque

Some places attract you because of their size.

Al Bidya Mosque attracts you because of its mystery.

Located near the village of Al Bidya, around 8 km north of Khor Fakkan on the east coast of Fujairah, this small historic mosque sits beautifully between the hillside and the Hajar Mountains.

When I first looked at the mosque, what struck me was how simple it appeared.

It isn't a huge building.

It doesn't need to be.

Its small size, unusual shape and four domes give it a character that makes you want to stop and look more closely.

And perhaps the most interesting part of the story is this:

Nobody knows for certain who originally built it.

🕌 A Mosque Wrapped in Mystery

Al Bidya is also known as Al Badiyah.

The origins of the mosque remain something of a puzzle, and the architecture has been associated with influences found elsewhere in the region.

The information from our original visit notes dates the mosque to somewhere between the 15th and 17th centuries, with 1446 mentioned as a possible date.

That uncertainty actually makes the place more interesting to me.

You're standing in front of a building that has survived for centuries, but the exact story of its builders isn't completely clear.

There is something special about history that still leaves a few questions unanswered.

🏛️ Unique Architecture

The mosque is remarkably small, measuring approximately 6.8 × 6.8 metres.

Its shape is described as square but somewhat irregular.

The Mihrab is approximately 180 cm high and 90 cm wide.

The building stands within a rectangular courtyard constructed from stone and mud.

But the feature that immediately catches your eye is the roof.

Four distinctive domes sit above the mosque.

Similar architectural styles have been noted in mosques in Yemen, Oman and Qatar, although the number of domes differs.

⛰️ Between the Hills & Hajar Mountains

One of the things I like most about visiting Al Bidya Mosque is the setting.

The mosque isn't surrounded by a modern cityscape.

Instead, it sits against the Hajar Mountains, with the surrounding hills providing a natural backdrop.

This gives the visit a very different feeling.

You can take your time, look at the architecture and then look beyond the mosque towards the mountains.

History and landscape come together in one small place.

🧱 Stone & Mud Construction

The mosque was built using traditional materials, including stone and mud.

When you look closely at the structure, you can appreciate how much has survived despite its age.

There is something humbling about standing beside a building constructed with such simple materials and knowing that generations of people have passed through the same place.

🕌 A Living Place of Worship

One thing that's important to remember is that Al Bidya isn't simply an archaeological monument.

Daily prayers continue here.

Visitors are allowed to visit, but modest dress and respect for worshippers are essential.

For me, this makes the experience more meaningful.

You're not walking through an empty museum.

You're visiting a historic place that still has a role in the local community.
