About this trail
If you ask me what makes Oman different from anywhere else in the Middle East, my answer is always the same.
The wadis.
Most people imagine endless deserts when they think about Oman. But once you leave the highways and head towards the Hajar Mountains, you'll discover a completely different landscape, deep canyons, emerald pools, towering cliffs, ancient villages, date plantations, and mountain roads that seem to disappear into the horizon.
I've always enjoyed exploring Oman because every wadi has its own personality.
Some are perfect for a relaxed scenic drive. Others demand a capable 4WD, while a few reward you with challenging hikes, hidden waterfalls, or crystal-clear swimming pools.
Whether you're planning a weekend road trip from the UAE or a longer overlanding expedition across Oman, these wadis deserve a place on your itinerary.
Here are nine of my favourites.
📍 Wadi Al Khoud
A peaceful wadi near Muscat, popular for easy drives, picnics, and seasonal greenery after rainfall.
📍 Wadi Bani Awf & Snake Gorge Canyon ⭐ (Editor's Pick)
One of Oman's most spectacular mountain routes featuring dramatic cliffs, off-road driving, canyon adventures, and the beautiful Balad Sayt Village.
📍 Wadi Dima (Wadi Al Arbeieen)
A hidden gem with turquoise pools, waterfalls, and scenic mountain roads, perfect for swimming and photography.
📍 Wadi Shab
Oman's most famous wadi, known for its emerald pools, cave waterfall, and family-friendly hiking adventure.
📍 Wadi Al Arbeieen
A stunning valley surrounded by the Eastern Hajar Mountains, offering crystal-clear pools, picnic spots, and easy access from Muscat.
📍 Wadi Dhum
A remote mountain wadi featuring rugged landscapes, seasonal streams, and quiet camping opportunities away from the crowds.
📍 Wadi Bani Khalid
One of Oman's iconic wadis with year-round natural pools, palm groves, caves, and easy walking trails suitable for all ages.
📍 Wadi Al Abyad (White Wadi)
Named after its light-colored limestone rocks, this scenic wadi offers shallow pools, mountain scenery, and enjoyable 4WD exploration.
📍 Wadi Tool
A lesser-known adventure destination with dramatic rock formations, seasonal waterfalls, and peaceful hiking through untouched mountain landscapes.
