November to April is the most comfortable period for wadi driving and camping. Ras Al Khaimah's official tourism guidance also recommends the cooler months for outdoor activities around Wadi Shawka.

Winter is especially enjoyable because you can drive during the day and comfortably sit outside around the campsite at night.

Early morning is great for driving and photography.

Late afternoon is my favourite time to reach the campsite. You get enough daylight to set up camp and can enjoy the sunset before dinner.

🌦️ Weather

Always check the mountain weather before entering a wadi.

These are seasonal watercourses, and heavy rainfall can quickly change the terrain. Never camp directly in a wadi bed or attempt to cross flowing water.

Wadi Shawka, for example, can develop natural pools after rainfall.

The exact access point depends on the wadi route you choose.

The Ras Al Khaimah mountain region has several interconnected wadi areas, including Wadi Shawka, Wadi Asimah, Wadi Fara, Wadi Haqeel and surrounding mountain tracks.

Wadi Shawka is approximately 92 km from Dubai and has paved access to the main recreational area before the surrounding off-road tracks begin.

4x4 is essential for the off-road sections.

A capable vehicle such as a Land Cruiser, Patrol, Prado, Wrangler or similar high-clearance 4WD is recommended.

Don't judge the difficulty from the first few kilometres. Wadi tracks can change from easy gravel to loose rocks, steep climbs or soft surfaces very quickly.

• Don't camp in a wadi bed.

The best part of a wadi camping trip isn't always the toughest climb or the longest track.

Sometimes it's finding that quiet campsite after several hours of driving, switching off the engine and realising there is absolutely nothing you need to do next.
