The Manali–Leh Highway: Planning a High-Altitude Expedition

Road trips · Overlanding and road trips · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: The Leh-Manali Highway is about 428 km, crosses passes above 4,000 m on average, and is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation. It is usually open from about May to October. The Atal Tunnel (9.02 km, open since October 2020) bypasses Rohtang Pass. Acclimatise at Keylong, Jispa or Darcha.

The route at a glance

From Manali the road runs through Marhi, Rohtang area, Sissu, Keylong, Jispa, Darcha, Zingzingbar, Baralacha La, Sarchu (the state border), Pang, Tanglang La, Upshi and Karu to Leh. Tanglang La is given at roughly 5,328 to 5,359 m depending on the source, so treat altitude figures as approximate.

The Atal Tunnel shortens the Himachal section by about 45 km and cuts the Manali to Keylong drive to about two hours.

Acclimatise on the way

Altitude illness is the biggest risk. Plan to sleep at Keylong, Jispa or Darcha rather than rush to Sarchu or Pang. Review driving in the Himalayas and, for the physiology, the BMC ascent-rate guidance and TravelHealthPro notes below. Never ignore headache, nausea or confusion; descend.

Road hazards

  • Some stretches are only one to one-and-a-half lanes wide; give way to uphill and army traffic.
  • Glacial meltwater crosses the road in places and runs lower before noon; read river crossing judgement.
  • Slush and rain make surfaces slippery; see tyre pressure basics.
  • Nights are very cold even in summer.

Fuel, food and stays

Historically there was no fuel station between Tandi and Karu, and a station at Keylong has operated since September 2021. Carry reserve fuel and follow fuel, water and emergency planning. Tent camps appear at Jispa, Darcha, Zingzingbar, Sarchu and Pang, with guesthouses at several towns. Confirm that fuel and stays are open before relying on them.

Prepare the team

Run convoy planning, pack first aid and emergency kit and check the weather using forecast guidance. Rules, permits, closures and fees change. Confirm locally before you travel.
