How Do You Decide the Best Season for an Outdoor Trip?

Trip planning · Overlanding and road trips · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: Decide by region, not by the calendar alone. India's seasons are winter (December-February), summer (March-May), the southwest monsoon (June-September) and the post-monsoon transition (October-November). Deserts suit winter, the Himalayas suit the snow-free summer window, and Tamil Nadu gets much of its rain from the northeast monsoon.

Quick facts

Starting pointAnywhere
WinterDecember-February; Himalayan snow heaviest above about 1,500 m
SummerMarch-May; April hottest in the west and south, May-June in much of the north
Southwest monsoonJune-September; Kerala about 1 June, Delhi by 29 June
Post-monsoonOctober-November transition
Northeast monsoonSeptember/October to December/January; most of Tamil Nadu's rain

Start with the hazard, not the view

For each place ask what the main hazard is in each season: heat, flood, landslide, snow closure or cold. Then choose the window where that hazard is lowest and the activity is possible.

  • High Himalaya: roads such as Manali-Leh are usually open about May to October.
  • Assam: spring and autumn are described as most pleasant; floods hit almost every year (Assam by road).
  • Western Ghats: heavy monsoon rain; see monsoon camping.
