The High-Altitude Lakes of Ladakh: Landscape and Ecology
In short: Pangong Tso (about 4,225 m, 134 km long) and Tso Moriri (about 4,522 m, 26 km long) are Ladakh's best-known lakes. Both are endorheic, host breeding birds such as bar-headed geese, and need permits for visitors. Tso Moriri is a Ramsar site; Pangong straddles a disputed border.

Pangong Tso
The lake is divided by salinity and freezes completely in winter. Roughly 40% is India-administered, so on the Indian side visitors need an Inner Line Permit and must travel with an accredited guide; boating is not allowed.
Tso Moriri
The Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve protects a lake used by 34 bird species, including the endangered black-necked crane and breeding bar-headed geese. The Changpa nomads graze yaks, sheep and goats nearby. Snow leopard, Tibetan wolf and kiang live in the region.
Altitude and etiquette
Acclimatise well; read Himalayan altitude notes and high-lake camping safety. Keep away from nesting birds and grazing herds.
