Hiking with a Group: Pace, Preparation and Trail Etiquette
In short: A safe group hike is paced for its slowest member, has a leader and a sweep, agrees a turn-around time and headcounts at every stop. Follow forest rules, keep noise low and respect other trail users.

Trail etiquette
- Stay on the trail and do not cut switchbacks.
- Yield to uphill hikers where the path is narrow.
- Keep noise low; avoid loudspeakers; respect wildlife.
- Carry out all rubbish, including from others.
When things go wrong
Know your emergency plan: call 112 where there is coverage, stay together, and keep an injured person warm and hydrated. See the day hike packing list for kit, and the trail difficulty guide for planning time.
