What Is Elevation Gain and Why Does It Matter When Hiking?
In short: Elevation gain, also called cumulative gain or total ascent, is the sum of every climb on a route. Descents are not subtracted. Together with distance it is a key measure of how hard a hike is, because a route with many ups and downs involves far more climbing than one that rises once.
Quick facts
| Starting point | Anywhere |
|---|---|
| Also called | Cumulative gain or total ascent |
| Descents | Not subtracted |
| Measured by | Adding each climb; GPS devices and apps do it automatically |
| Why it matters | With distance, it shows physical demand |
What it is
Elevation gain is the total of every climb made on a journey. A single climb is summit height minus start height. On a route with several ups and downs, you add each climb, so the total can be much larger than the difference between start and finish.
Why distance alone misleads
Ten flat kilometres and ten kilometres with 800 m of climbing are very different days. Gain captures the effect of rolling terrain, which involves much more vertical effort than a route that rises once and stays up.
Using it to choose a hike
- Look at distance and gain together; compare with hikes you have done.
- Remember the return trip counts if you go up the same ridge again.
- At altitude, the same gain feels harder; see preparing for a high-altitude trek.
- Build up gradually; start with beginner hikes.
Finding the number
Trail guides, GPS watches and mapping apps report gain; treat figures as approximate, because devices differ. Use it with judging trail difficulty and plan your pace with group hiking.

Frequently asked questions
Is elevation gain the same as the summit height?
No; it is the total of all climbs, not the height of the top.
Are descents counted?
No.
Why does it matter?
It shows how much climbing you will do, which distance alone does not.
How do I find it?
From trail guides, GPS devices or mapping apps.
