The fort
Al Fahidi Fort was built in several phases from coral rock and mortar and guarded the town's landward approaches. It later served as the ruler's headquarters and was restored in the reign of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The Dubai Museum opened inside it in 1971 to show traditional life; an extension opened in 1995. A later renovation was reported, so confirm what is open.
The neighbourhood
The historical neighbourhood is described as preserving the lifestyle that prevailed from the mid-19th century until the 1970s. Buildings use coral stone, teak and palm fronds, and the barjeel, or wind tower, is the best-known feature, a passive way of coping with the summer heat.
What to look for

- Narrow, stone-paved alleys that give shade.
