How Can You Plan an Outdoor Trip During Changing UAE Weather?

Overlanding · Overlanding and road trips · United Arab Emirates · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: UAE weather can change quickly: summer heat is extreme, with coastal averages above 48 C in July and August, while sudden heavy rain can flood wadis. Check official forecasts, set go or no-go rules in advance and move trips to the cooler months.

Before the trip

  • Check the official forecast and warnings, including from the National Center of Meteorology.
  • Choose the cooler months; see season guide.
  • Set go or no-go rules: for example, cancel if rain is forecast in the mountains upstream of your wadi.
  • Tell someone your route and return time.

On the day

  • Re-check conditions at the trailhead.
  • Avoid wadis and low ground in or after rain; see flood safety.
  • Do not use open fires or electrical equipment in thunderstorms (reported advice).
  • Carry water, sun protection and layers for cool mountain air.

Backup plans

Have an alternative: a heritage visit such as Al Fahidi or Heart of Sharjah works when the weather turns.

Desert and wadi safety

  • Tell someone your route and return time, and carry more water than you expect to need.
  • Carry a charged phone, a power bank and offline maps; mobile coverage can drop in deserts and mountains.
  • Travel with at least two vehicles on remote tracks, and know how to lower tyre pressure and recover a stuck vehicle before you go.
  • Avoid wadis and low ground when rain is forecast anywhere upstream; see wadi flash flood safety.
  • Summer heat is dangerous. Plan outdoor trips for the cooler months; see the best season for outdoor travel.
