A mountain exclave
Hatta is bordered by Oman to the east and south, the Ajman exclave of Masfout to the west and Ras Al Khaimah to the north. Its elevation makes it cooler and less humid than Dubai, though summers are still hot. It was formerly Omani territory and was transferred to Dubai around 1850.
The heritage village
- Reconstructed mountain dwellings restored by Dubai Municipality.
- Two military towers from the 1880s and a fort from 1896.
- The Juma mosque, built in 1780.
- A restored falaj irrigation system.
Outdoor options
Visitors go kayaking at the dam, hiking, mountain biking and camping. Off-road wadi tracks that were once popular have closed following the formal border agreement with Oman, so do not rely on old route notes. Check which areas are open and what permissions apply; see camping rules and wadi safety.
Desert and wadi safety
- Tell someone your route and return time, and carry more water than you expect to need.
- Carry a charged phone, a power bank and offline maps; mobile coverage can drop in deserts and mountains.
- Travel with at least two vehicles on remote tracks, and know how to lower tyre pressure and recover a stuck vehicle before you go.
- Avoid wadis and low ground when rain is forecast anywhere upstream; see wadi flash flood safety.
- Summer heat is dangerous. Plan outdoor trips for the cooler months; see the best season for outdoor travel.
