The Konkan Coast Road Trip: Beaches, Forts and Coastal Villages
In short: The Konkan is the strip of India's western coast between the Daman Ganga River at Daman and Anjediva Island near Karwar, with the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. It spans Maharashtra, Goa and part of Karnataka and suits a slow coastal drive outside the monsoon.

What the Konkan is
The Konkan is a long, narrow coastal region. In Maharashtra it covers districts such as Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg; it continues through Goa and into Uttara Kannada in Karnataka, from Karwar to Bhatkal. Towns on the way include Mumbai, Panjim, Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal.
Beaches fringed with coconut palms are a common sight, for example around Dabhol in Ratnagiri district.
Designing the drive
- Treat it as a slow drive of short hops rather than a race, so you can stop in fishing villages and at forts.
- Plan nights in coastal towns, and keep one flexible day for weather.
- Use the budget planner and weekend trip planning for pacing ideas.
Monsoon and coastal safety
The Western Ghats force heavy rain onto the coast from around June, so the monsoon changes road and sea conditions. Check forecast guidance and the IMD warnings, avoid swimming in rough surf, and respect local beach flag and lifeguard advice.
Responsible coastal travel
Carry rubbish out, keep to established parking and do not camp on beaches unless a site is clearly permitted; confirm local rules. Read Leave No Trace and responsible 4x4 trip planning. Rules, permits, closures and fees change. Confirm locally before you travel.
