About Keezhadi
Keezhadi (also spelled Keeladi) sits on a coconut-grove plateau near the village of Pallichandai Thidal, a few kilometres from Madurai. Systematic excavation began in 2015 under the Archaeological Survey of India and was later continued by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology.
What makes the site notable is the evidence of a planned, literate, craft-producing settlement: brick structures and drains, pottery inscribed in Tamil-Brahmi script, beads, spindle whorls and other everyday objects.
Why visit
- See an active, recent-era excavation landscape rather than only a monument.
- Pair it with Madurai's temples and museums for a full early-Tamil heritage trail.
- Understand the Sangam-era debate directly from the site and its museum.
History and what has been found
Excavation seasons since 2015 uncovered layers of habitation with structures, pottery and ornaments. Radiocarbon dates reported by the state archaeology department place the earliest layers around the 6th century BCE.
Scholars continue to debate the exact dating and wider interpretation, so treat any single date as a reported finding, not a settled fact.
