About Gangaikonda Cholapuram
Rajendra I, son of Rajaraja I, founded this city after his campaign to the Ganges and named it for that victory. It served as the Chola capital for roughly two and a half centuries.
The surviving heart of the city is the Brihadisvara temple, a Shiva temple with a tall tiered vimana, a large Nandi and finely carved sculpture. Most of the palace and city have disappeared, leaving the temple as the main reason to come.
