Heritage · History, heritage and archaeology · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: Lothal, near Saragwala village in Ahmedabad district, Gujarat, dates to around 2300 BCE. The ASI regards its 215 m structure as one of the world's earliest docks, though some archaeologists argue it was an irrigation tank. It is on UNESCO's tentative list and faces salinity and weathering concerns.

What was found

Excavations revealed a mound, township, marketplace and acropolis, with drainage systems, bathing platforms, wells, a warehouse and a bead factory. An archaeological museum adjoins the site.

The dockyard debate

The ASI considers the structure one of the earliest docks, linked to an ancient course of the Sabarmati River. Others, including Leshnik (1968) and Yule (1982), argue it was mainly an irrigation tank. Marine microfossils and salt crystals found by the National Institute of Oceanography suggest seawater once filled it. Present the debate honestly when you describe it.

Conservation

The remains face salinity, weathering and siltation. Stay on paths and follow responsible site visiting.
