How Archaeologists Study Ancient Settlements

Heritage · History, heritage and archaeology · 2 min read · Researched guide · Last updated 2026-10-23

In short: Archaeologists read a settlement by its layers. Stratigraphy treats each deposit, wall or cut as a context, and in an undisturbed sequence upper layers are younger. Radiocarbon dating can date organic material up to about 50,000 years but needs calibration and careful sampling.

Contexts and layers

A context is a single event or action that leaves a trace: deposits (like the fill of a ditch), structures (walls) and cuts (digging that removes earlier material). Their relationships show the order of events; a Harris matrix diagram maps them.

Dating

  • Relative dating: a context between two datable layers falls between their dates.
  • Latest-evidence rule: a layer is no older than its latest artefact, since older items can be reused or redeposited.
  • Radiocarbon: dates wood, charcoal, bone, shell, seeds and charred food residue; it needs calibration.

Limits

Modern contamination makes samples look younger, old carbon can make them look older, marine and freshwater organisms can appear very old, and old wood can pre-date the event it dates. Reported 1-sigma ranges cover only about 68% confidence.

As a visitor

When a sign gives a date, ask how it was obtained. Apply this at Dholavira or Lothal, and read how to interpret historical claims.

Frequently asked questions

What is stratigraphy?

Reading the order of layers and events at a site.

What can radiocarbon date?

Organic material up to about 50,000 years old.

Are dates exact?

No; they come with ranges and caveats.

Why do excavators record so much?

Digging destroys context, so records are the evidence.
