What Liwa is
Liwa Oasis stretches roughly 100 km east to west and holds about 50 villages, with Muzayri' as its centre. It lies about 98 km south of the Gulf coast on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, a vast and mostly uninhabited desert.
People and history
The Bani Yas tribe is associated with Liwa. Traditionally, men worked as summer pearl divers on the coast to supplement date farming. The oasis is described as the birthplace of the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai; the Al Nahyan family moved its residence to Abu Dhabi in 1793. The British explorer Wilfred Thesiger crossed the Empty Quarter and visited in 1946 and 1948.
Driving and camping in big dunes
Dune driving is skilled work and can strand vehicles or injure people. Local reports note penalties for off-road driving in restricted areas, so learn which tracks and zones are allowed. For camping law, see UAE camping rules. Stay on established tracks where possible and follow Leave No Trace principles, which apply anywhere.
Desert and wadi safety
- Tell someone your route and return time, and carry more water than you expect to need.
- Carry a charged phone, a power bank and offline maps; mobile coverage can drop in deserts and mountains.
- Travel with at least two vehicles on remote tracks, and know how to lower tyre pressure and recover a stuck vehicle before you go.
- Avoid wadis and low ground when rain is forecast anywhere upstream; see wadi flash flood safety.
- Summer heat is dangerous. Plan outdoor trips for the cooler months; see the best season for outdoor travel.
