How Are Ancient Indian Forts Designed?
In short: Indian forts used terrain as the first defence. Examples include Daulatabad's scarped 50 m faces and moat, Sindhudurg's 9.1 m thick-walled sea fort with a concealed entrance, Kumbhalgarh's 36 km wall and Chittor's seven gates. Water storage was as important as walls.
Quick facts
| Starting point | Anywhere |
|---|---|
| Terrain | Hills, islands and ridges chosen for defence |
| Daulatabad | Scarped faces about 50 m, moat, three zones |
| Sindhudurg | Walls about 9.1 m high and 3.7 m thick; concealed entrance |
| Kumbhalgarh | Wall about 36 km |
| Chittor | Seven gates; 84 water bodies once |
Choose the site
Forts sit on hills, ridges, islands and cliffs. At Daulatabad the Yadavas cut the lower slopes into near-vertical faces about 50 m tall and dug a moat.
Layers and gates
- Daulatabad has three zones: Balakot (citadel), Kataka (double rampart) and Ambarkot (outer wall).
- Chittor has seven gates, with Ram Pol the main entrance.
- Sindhudurg hides its main entrance so it cannot be pinpointed from outside.
Walls, water and the sea
Kumbhalgarh's perimeter wall runs about 36 km. Sindhudurg's walls were designed to resist both enemies and the sea. Chittor once had 84 water bodies, of which about 20 to 22 survive; water storage decided how long a fort could withstand a siege.
Read forts on the ground
Look for gate sequences, bends, ramps and water tanks. See Daulatabad, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Sindhudurg and Tamil Nadu forts; use responsible site reading.
